How do franchises get away with making absolute egregious mistakes?
Behind the NFL is a massive community of media members, social media “experts”, Reddit armchair GMs, twitter gurus, sports bettors, etc. Many of us would consider ourselves highly educated football enthusiasts. Although I follow every single team, read training camp notes, watch all-22, listen to podcasts, and constantly browse/contribute to /r/NFL - I still in no way think I’m capable, competent, or qualified to be an NFL GM.
With that being said - How are some teams able to get away with making just absolutely boneheaded moves, that even most casual fans wouldn’t approve of. I’m not talking about, “hindsight is 20-20” but we’ll see breaking news and 99% of the comments will say this was a terrible move.
Deshaun Watson. The Cleveland Browns traded 3 first round picks, and gave him a fully guaranteed $230M deal. Why would you subject your fanbase to this?
Kirk Cousins / Michael Penix Jr. The Atlanta Falcons sign Kirk Cousins to a 4 year $180M deal. 6 weeks later they draft Michael Penix Jr. As the 4th QB off the board. What kind of move is this? You’re drafting a guy that high while you’ve just locked in a massive deal for Cousins? Not to mention, Penix was the #5th best QB in the draft on a lot of peoples Big Boards. He’s had multiple surgeries on his shoulders and knees.
Robert Aguayo. Bucs draft a kicker in the 2nd round? He goes on to literally play only 1 year in the NFL.
There’s COUNTLESS other mistakes. The list goes on & on & on. Some organizations clearly make these moves on a much more frequent basis.
How do the most qualified, supposedly most competent, most experienced, seasoned individuals make these kind of mistakes that even an amateur fan would disagree with immediately?
How can you even be a Browns fan, for instance? If my team traded for and gave a predator that kind of money, after being the laughing stock of the league for 20 years; there’s just no way I’d continue to be a fan & support the team. How do the Browns even fill their stadium? How do people have jobs covering this franchise? During the draft, how did a room full of people from the Falcons FO decide to draft a QB #8 overall, after just inking Cousins?
It’s mind boggling to me.
